This past weekend I went to Ikea and picked up a few new things to update my bedroom. I took my bedroom in my parents house and made it into a mini studio apartment, minus the kitchen. Since I’m a college student, I wanted to stay on budget and I managed to do just that. If you’re like me and you find yourself wanting to change the look of your room, here are some inexpensive ways to do so! Just grab a cup of tea and keep on reading!
CHANGE YOU BEDDING
Changing your bedding is one of the easiest ways to make the most impact in your room. Although bedspreads can get expensive, duvets are the perfect option if you’re on a budget! I would suggest buying two, so whenever you get tired of one you can easily switch to the other. Ikea and H&M home have some lovely designs, so just browse around and find one that fits your style.
DISPLAY YOUR CLOTHES
Usually clothing racks are viewed as extra space to hang clothes, but they can also be a great way to add some of your personal style into the room! Hang the clothing items that contrast or match with the color theme of your room, or hang the pieces from your wardrobe that are your favorite.
CREATE A SEATING AREA
By simply taking a corner of your room and creating a seating area, you can give part of your room a whole new purpose. Having a place to sit and read, browse through your phone in the morning, or do some work is important in a bedroom. Although some armchairs can be more on the pricier side, this loveseat from Ikea was inexpensive and has plenty of room to lounge around. Look around at local furniture shops, thrift stores, or even just put some large, cozy pillows in the corner of your room! Just create a space that you can come to at the end of a long day and relax.
BOOKS ARE FOR MORE THAN JUST READING
Books and magazines are great for reading, but they’re also a great way to decorate a space. Take some magazines and books with interesting covers and display them on your nightstand, desk, or even stack them on a shelf or the floor of your room!
BECOME A PLANT MOM OR DAD
Plants are a great way to bring more life into a room. Do some research on which plants would work best for you, pick up two or three in various sizes and heights, and then place them where your room gets the most sunlight. If you’re not the best at remembering to water them, set a remind on your phone to go off each week.
DISPLAY YOUR SMALLER ITEMS
One of the biggest problems I use to have was figuring out where to store all of my smaller, personal items without making my room look cluttered. Walls shelfs and shelving units are a great way to display anything from clocks and books to plants and perfumes, without taking up too much space.
NEW CHAIR FOR YOUR DESK
If you’ve had your desk for a while and want a change, but don’t want to pay for a new one since they do run on the pricier side, simply change your chair! Go for a new color or pattern and give your mini office space a new look. Just always make sure that the chair is the right height for your desk.
REFRESH YOUR WALLS
Sometimes all it takes to make your room feel like new is changing the wall art. Refresh your walls by adding some new posters or prints! Etsy has some lovely designers who make beautiful prints, and it’s a great way to support local artists. Mix and match between different sizes, and to add some dimension leave some of the prints unframed. If you’re a fan of the wall art you already have, just simply change out the frames with some new ones!
And that’s it! Now set a budget, do some measuring of your space, look around online and head to a local furniture store to give your room a new look!
