Hi guys! I was always someone who struggled to define my personal style, but I soon realized that you don’t need to put a label like prep or chic on it. Your personal style will be forever changing and that’s a good thing! The important thing when it comes to style is to have pieces in your wardrobe that you love. I thought I would share with you some tips on finding your personal style and how to build a wardrobe filled with things you love!
A lot of finding your style is figuring out what you do and don’t like, and what looks good on you. Figuring out what colors look good with your complexion and which ones don’t is a great place to start. I personally know that white and yellow are two colors to avoid when shopping. Try on different shades of colors and rule out the ones you don’t like. This makes picking pieces for your wardrobe that much easier!
Once you figure out what colors you like, then start to figuring out what styles you perfer! High-waisted vs low rise, cold-shoulder vs off the shoulder, oversized vs fitted. This will let you know which styles to stay away from when shopping, and which ones to try on. Sadly there will be styles you love but will not look the best on your body type (for me since I have broad shoulders I cannot wear off the shoulder without looking like a linebacker), but with the many to choose from you’ll find the right styles for you!
It’s hard to know where to start with your wardrobe when there are so many options out there, but having a good set of basics is a great place to start. Having a few pair of jeans in different washes, some neutral sweaters, and other basics are great building blocks to creating an outfit! H&M and Zara are two of my favorite stores to buy good quality basics.
Now after having some basics, it’s also important to have a few statement pieces in your wardrobe! It could be anything from statement shoes to a statement coat. Just find some versatile pieces that can add to a majority of the basics and let what you love show through the clothing.
I feel like I’m a broken record when it comes to this, but social media is a great tool when it comes to style! Create a Pinterest board and pin outfits and styles that you like that you can look at when out shopping. Go on your favorite bloggers Instagram page and take note of the outfits you love. Magazines are also a great place to get inspiration. Cut out images and make yourself a style mood board! This will help you figure out what style you more lean towards.
The important thing to remember when it comes to your personal style is it’s all trial and error! There will be times when you’ll look back at previous outfits and think “what was I thinking” and there will outfits that you’ll look back on and love. Just remember to experiment, try new styles, have fun with it, and most importantly- there are no rules when it comes to style!
Hope you found these tips helpful, and I’d love to know your thoughts on personal style!
