Creating a blog can be one of the best things you can do. It allows to have a place to inspire and empower others, while sharing your interests and bits of your life. With that being said, it can be a bit confusing to figure out where to start. So to help you out I have put together a new mini series on my blog! Every few weeks for the next few months there will be a new post on a different part of how to start a blog. This first one is all about what to do and consider before you actually start one, so let’s get on into it! ->
Knowing exactly why you are starting your blog can help you decide where you want to take it in the future. Is it to inspire and help others on a specific topic? Or share your love for fashion? Write down a few reasons why you want to start a blog. Think of it as writing a mission statement for a business. What do you hope to accomplish / achieve with your blog?
Once you’ve decided why you’re starting your blog, it’s time to decide what exactly your blog will be about! Take a sheet of paper and write down a list of things you’re passionate about + would love to write about. Once you’re done narrow it down to your top two or three. It’s important not to blog about too many main categories, as it can be a bit confusing to your readers. With that being said, you can be a lifestyle blog and blog about everything from bits of your life, tips for everyday life, and more.
So it’s really up to you what you want to include in each category, just make sure to stick to 2 or 3 main ones. After that, write down the sub categories you will talk about for each. For example, my blog is a lifestyle and fashion blog + blogging tips. Under lifestyle I blog about work and life tips, looks into my life, and more. Under fashion I share tips and OOTD’S. And under blogging tips I share tips for both blogging and other resources to improve your blog. Just make sure to pick topics you’re passionate about!
Picking a blog name can be a bit of a challenge. What to keep in mind when picking your blog name is if you will like the name in 10+ years. Although it’s not impossible to change your blog name, you will have to update every social media site and notify your readers. It’s easier to just stick to one name. Get creative and write down 10-20 names you like. Then go around to friends and family and ask which one is their favorite. If you’re at a loss at what to pick, you can always just use your name. Also make sure to have two back-ups because someone could already have that domain name!
Make a plan of where you want your blog to go in the next one, two, three + years. This is good to do in the beginning because while you’re blogging you can look back on your goals, and see what actions you have to take to achieve them. It can be something as simple as getting to 200 pages reads to collaborating with a fellow blogger!
