My Space: How I Turned My Bedroom Into A “Studio Apartment”

Last fall I redid my bedroom and created my own “studio apartment”. Since I never went off to college I decieded to give my room a much needed makeover. I now have a seating/living area, workspace area, dressing area, and of course my bedroom area. I am still in love with how I managed to use the space and how it all turned out. Although I still have some finishing touches to do, I thought I would share with you a look at my space + share some of my tips to help you create your own studio apartment!

My bed is a queen sized bed from IKEA that has 4 storage drawers. I find having a bed with storage is a lifesaver since it allows me to store more of my belongings without any clutter. I use the two drawers against the wall to store books and items I don’t need to get to. The other two drawers is wear I store all of my pants, jeans, etc as well as exercise clothes + holiday decorations. The print above my bed is from Desenio and no photo of it will ever do it justice.

I have a reservable striped duvet cover from Ikea and my striped blanket is also from Ikea. All of my pillows are from Target except for the red one which is from Ikea.

This little corner of my room is dedicated to my workspace. I love that it gets a lot of natural light and it’s perfect for getting work done.

I chose a secretary desk from Ikea because it would allow me to have more space. When I’m done working I just simply close it up and it hides all of my belongings. My desk chair is also from Ikea, however it’s actually one of their dining chairs. If I’m working for a long time I will simply put a pillow on it and I’m good to go!

All of the prints in my room are from Desenio and this little art figure is from Ikea.

This is my living room area and my favorite part of my room. The shelf is from Ikea and it’s where I store some books I’m reading/love, camera equipment, perfume, plants, my eyeglasses, and other little decor items. The clock is from Ikea and the speckled vase is from Target. All of my plants in my space are also from Ikea and Trader Joe’s!

I was lucky enough to discover this love seat and it fits perfectly into my space! It’s from Ikea, but they sadly don’t do the smaller version anymore. My black and white pillow is from Ikea and my other love seat pillow is from H&M Home. This is where I spend my mornings catching up on social media + news and where I spend my evenings reading.

My coffee table is also from Ikea and I love how it has a shelf underneath where I can store all of my stationary bits.

I try to keep my coffee table relativity simple. This wire basket is from Target’s dollar section and what I store in it changes every week. I always have a cup of tea or coffee on my table as well as this large carafe filled with water from Ikea. There are always magazines and plants on my coffee table as well.

I got this large mirror from Ikea to help open up the space & it’s the perfect place to me to get ready in the morning. I usually will keep my purse hanging off of it so I can grab it and head out the door!

My Tips For Creating Your Own Studio Apartment

When taking your bedroom and creating a studio apartment you have to not to afraid to add bigger pieces. Adding a few bigger pieces will actually help make the room appear bigger, although you don’t want to over do it. For a living room area depending on how big your room is either get a comfy lounge chair or a small love seat. I find Ikea does great love seats for smaller rooms as well as chairs. You can also get a coffee table or side table for your living area to put any magazines, books or plants on.

For your workspace you either have to have a larger love seat/chair and smaller desk or the other way around. I find secretary desks are a great option because you can fold it up when you’re done so you get more space + you can hide any clutter. Getting storage units to put under your bed can be a great way to maximize space. I would recommend getting a large mirror you can use when getting dress and it will help open the space.

After that just put your own finishing touches on the room! You can get a rug to section off your seating area, shelfs to display your items, plants to add some greenery to your space, prints to make your walls less bare, and anything else you want. It’s all about creating a space you love that you look forward to being in and coming home to!

Thank you Sonia! That is so sweet of you. I had to move my desk by the window because I couldn’t stand not getting natural light when I work x

Whaaaaat? Omg that’s your room!? I am BEYOND jealous! It’s absolutely spotless and it literally reminds me of a magazine! I love it so so much! You should be an interior designer! I actually live 15 minutes from an IKEA so I should get on that stat, haha.

You are too sweet Kim! It sadly isn’t always that spotless (I wish). I live 3 hours away from Ikea, but I love their home decor so much that it’s worth the drive. You should definitely go have a look at their stuff. It’s affordable and so aesthetically appealing, and not to mention they have amazing food too!
