How To Maintain Privacy As A Blogger + OOTD

Being a blogger is a lot about sharing your life and personal experiences with others. It’s an amazing way to connect with people and share your tips, advice, personal style, and more! However with this comes the challenge of balancing maintaining privacy but still being open and personal with your readers. I thought I would put together my tips & advice on how to maintain privacy as a blogger.

Just keep in mind that these are just my suggestions, and that you should do whatever you feel comfortable with!

Figure Out What You Are Comfortable Sharing, And What You Are Not

As a blogger you have to figure out that balance between being personal and still having privacy. Figure out what exactly you are comfortable with sharing online. Things like family members, where you go to school, your job, where your live, and more are just some things to consider. You don’t have to share something just because others are. It’s possible to be open and personal without putting too much information online. At the end of the day it’s your blog and you can do whatever you like.

Don’t share exactly where you live

If you live in a big city or shoot photos in one, then you don’t really have to worry too much about this. But if you live in a smaller town/city, be mindful of what’s in your photo background. Avoid taking photos where it says the name of the city or town. I’ve done this before so it is something I always look for. Also avoid any local business names in photos as it’s easy to look them up. Be mindful of all of this on Instagram stories or Snapchat as well!

Don’t share too much personal information

Although it’s all up to you to find that balance of what you want to share, I would suggest avoiding sharing these few personal things. Don’t share exactly where you work (name & location) because you never know who could show up. I would also suggest not sharing too many family photos without getting their permission first. I know that personally my mom would be fine with it, but some of my other family members would not.

Use A Different Last Name

Surprisingly a decent amount of online creators don’t actually use their last name. This is smart because it makes it harder for people to find you or look up your personal information online. You don’t have to do this, but if you do you can use another family name, your middle name, or just a last name that you like. I always find this is good because people can’t look up information on your family members, who might not want any information to be online.

I’ve been trying to add a bit more color (mainly blue and red) to my wardrobe recently. This blue t-shirt is from the Gap’s 90’s collection. I love that it has more of a boxy fit, but I can easily tuck in it to some high waisted pants. These black pants are from ASOS and I wear them with too many outfits. My favorite way to style them is more casual like this outfit, with a t-shirt and sneakers. My sneakers are from Adidas, and the black jacket is also from the Gap. This is one of my go-to outfits for days where I want to be comfortable, but still have to go out.

And those are my tips for maintaining privacy as a blogger! I hope you can take them and find your own balance between being personal and having privacy.

Thank you Angie! It’s all about sharing what you’re comfortable in, so if you want to go for it! It’s always nice to put a face to the name (:

  2. Thank you for sharing these great tips. Especially when you are new in the game it is not that easy. Mostly you have to do you own experience. Have a fantastic day.

  3. I love the outfit. It looks like something that I would enjoy wearing. I agree with your tips. It’s a struggle to balance, how much is too much.

Yes, I think that a blogger can exactly manage private from public by choosing what sharing and what no, when and how much 🙂
Great tips and you are so beautiful!

Great topic, Kara! I had no idea that some bloggers use different/false last names. That’s pretty smart. You never know who is creeping on your page with bad intentions! I should be more wary of what I put online, as should others.

Thank you Kim! I was surprised too when I found that out. I always have to remind myself to be careful with what I share. There are some crazy people out there! x

Privacy is so important as a blogger! When I was much younger I use to put everything out there which was obviously not a good idea at all. Another great tip would be to post your insta stories or location after you’ve already left the place you want to geo tag because even if you think “it could never happen to me” there’s still a small change there’s weirdos out there who will go to your location just to see where you’re at.
