How To Grow Your Instagram In 2018

Social media is one of the best tools any online creator can use to share their work. As a blogger Instagram is a great way to promote your blog posts and connect with others. However over the past year Instagram has changed. No longer can you see posts in chronological order or do you see everyone you follows posts. This can be a bit discouraging, especially when you spend a lot of time on what you are creating. So to help I thought I would share some of my tips for growing your Instagram in 2018!

Stop worrying about the algorithm

We’ve all heard for months and months about how the new Instagram algorithm is ruining everything. And maybe it is. But there’s nothing we can do about it except make our concerns and frustrations known. So once you do that, stop worrying about the algorithm! If every time you go on Instagram all you’re thinking about is the algorithm and focus on how your photos are not performing as well as they use to, it will make Instagram more of a chore. It is hard since we’ve all seen our likes and interactions go down, but it’s important to be grateful for what we are still getting.

Interact with others as much as you can

One way that can help your Instagram grow in 2018 is to interact more with others! It may sound like a no brainer, but often we don’t send enough time on the social part of social media. Not only should you like other peoples photos, but leave a comment on the ones that you love or wowed you. Other people can see your comments and find your account, and there’s nothing better than supporting others. After all, what goes around comes around!

Make comments relate to post

It’s important that when you are commenting it is relevant to the photo and adds something. I have seen way too many times when someone leaves a comment that has nothing to do with the photo (they’re probably using a bot to do comments), and I often look back at the photo and go “what!? Did I miss something?”. You can leave a comment of what you love about the photo, what stood out to you, any thoughts that relate to the caption, and more. Also the more words the better. Although it’s okay to leave comments like “I love this shot” or “I love your outfit”, it’s also good to leave some longer ones too. It helps build a community.

Post what you genuinely like

People will be able to tell if you are posting content that you don’t genuinely like. Often times we think that posting photos that will get us more likes is the way to go, but it actually isn’t. It’s important to develop your own photo and editing style on Instagram, as well as take and post photos that you genuinely like or love. This will not only make creating content for Instagram more enjoyable, but it will help bring more people who genuinely love what you are creating to see your account. And that will result in them being more likely to head over to your blog or YouTube channel.

And those are my tips for growing your Instagram in 2018! Just always keep in mind that everything that is worth it will take time, and it won’t grow overnight. To grow your Instagram organically it will most likely take years, and that’s okay! Just enjoy creating and interacting with others, and the rest will fall into place.

All very good points! I wasted too much time upset about the new algorithms, but no more. It is what it is and I can’t do anything about it so I’m trying not to let it get to me. Genuine comments are so important too as well as supporting other bloggers. Thanks for writing this great post!

  3. I love this!! SO helpful! I honestly haven’t bought that much about the new algorithm but I’m just now trying to utilize the app. Loved that I came across this when I did (and that’s I noticed it from one of your IG posts) GREAT POST!

I always try to write genuine comments on Instagram but I never really think to leave long ones, I’ll try and do that! I don’t know why I guess I just figure long comments might annoy people? No idea why!

That’s so interesting because I’ve always thought that people might find shorter comments to be annoying! Long comments are some of my favorite ones to read on Instagram x

I know the algorithm has been known for so long now but it still continues to give me a headache! At times it can be very discouraging especially when you take the time to shoot your photos and edit them in a way that is your style. I hate to say it but I think we all like that little validation from people that we are creating beautiful photos. I totally agree on the interact with people more and don’t leave comments what are so vague or unrelated to your photo. The other day I got a comment that was like, “I love your status updates!” and it was a photo of me applying concealer LOL. I hate bot comments so much! Anyways lovely read girl and definitely things I’ll stick with!
