Home decor is a huge love of mine, maybe even a bigger love than clothing. However my home decor style is drastically different from a few years ago. Think bright blue walls, random furniture that didn’t go, and clutter everywhere. Over the past few years I’ve redone my space and pretty much found my overall home decor style. So I thought I would share with you some of my tips to help you develop your home decor style!
Find The Stores You Love
One of the easiest ways you can develop your home decor style is to figure out what stores you love. Have a browse online and in store at different home decor stores to see who’s items and style you love the most. Be sure to stick in your budget because there is nothing worse than falling in love with an item that you can’t afford. Some of my personal favorite stores for home decor are IKEA, Target, H&M Home, and a few of Urban Outfitters home decor items.
With there being so many different styles such as mid century modern, Scandinavian, modern, etc, it’s 100% okay to mix and match! In fact often times this makes spaces more interesting and not just like it came out of one store’s magazine. Mixing different stores items and styles that work well together can add a bit more depth to the space. In my space most of my main furniture is from IKEA, which although it’s all from one store they do have different furniture styles. And a lot of the smaller decor items such as pillows are a mix between IKEA and Target.
Just like with everything it can be easy to get caught up in trends when it comes to buying home decor. My golden rule is always 80% classic, minimal items that you know you’ll love, which usually is the bigger, more expensive items. And 20% is more “trend” items that maybe in a few years you’ll want to switch out such as throw pillows or blankets. This way you won’t look around in a few years and think “what was I thinking?”.
We all know what colors we lean towards when it comes to things like clothing, and it can be a big help to know the same for home decor. Coming up with a color scheme of a few colors can be a great starting point. It can be that you want more neutral colors with one pop of color, lots of prints, or just lots of color all around.
Some Extra Tips:
Don’t give up functionality for style. Items can look amazing and still be great for storage.
Make sure the furniture fits your space well. But don’t let that stop you from adding bigger pieces.
The walls make for great storage, as well as under beds.
You don’t need to break the bank to decorate a space. Often times a new pillow, bedding, wall piece or plant will do the trick.
If you love your space, that’s all that matters.
And those are my tips for developing your home decor style! Keep in mind that over the years your style and love for things will change, and that’s 100% okay. Just having an idea of what you love will make decorating a space easier.
