Things To Do To Get Your Blog Ready For The New Year

The new year is quickly approaching and most of us are off for the holidays. Although this is the perfect time to relax and reflect on the past year, it also is the perfect time to get your blog ready for 2019! The start of the new year is a great time to make a few changes and updates to your blog, but it can be hard to figure out where to start. So to help, here are some things you can do to get your blog ready for the new year ahead!

Link Newer Blog Posts In Relevant Older Posts

Spend some time going through your older blog posts and see if any of your newer blog posts that are similar topics can be linked. This helps drive traffic to your newer posts and gives your blog readers more valuable information and tips!

Work on SEO

Although SEO (search engine optimization) can be a scary term, it actually is important for your blog. There are many different articles out there that explain how to best improve your SEO based on the blogging platform you’re using (Blogger,, etc). If you are a self-hosted blog on, then I would highly suggest the Yoast SEO plugin! This allows you to put in a keyword for your post that helps your post show up when someone searches that keyword. It will also tell you how good the keyword you used is, how readable your post is, and let you put in a little snippet of what people can read on a search engine before clicking the link to your blog post. Overall it just makes SEO simpler and all of these features come with the free version!

Update About Page + Photo

For the new year give your blog’s About page a refresh. Give the page a read and update any information that needs to be changed and see if there is anything else you want to add. It also is a good idea to update the photo you have of yourself on the page, depending on how old it is. And if you don’t have an about page, then create one!

Create a Blog Promotion Plan

Take time to see how well each method you use to promote your blog posts actually works. Look at analytics to see how many people click over to your blog. This will give you an idea on which social media sites to spend more of your time in the new year promoting your posts on and which ones to spend a little less time on. It’s also a good idea to try something new, which could be mastering a new social media site that you don’t use as often or starting an email list, as it may be the key to driving more traffic to your blog!

If you need some tips for promoting your blog posts, then be sure to give this post a read!

Brainstorm Blog Post Ideas

Spend a day or two brainstorming a bunch of different blog post ideas that you may potentially want to create in 2019. Section them off based on the main categories you like to blog about (lifestyle, fashion, beauty, etc.).  Even if you think you probably won’t do a post on it, write it down anyway! You never know if later you come up with another idea based off of one you wrote.

Planning in advance is always a good idea, especially for the new year. Once you have a long list of ideas, put them on a calendar and plan when each post will go up for the month of January. Keep on top of this by planning each month in advance.

Here are some posts filled with blog post ideas to get you started: 25 lifestyle blog post ideas, 25 fashion blog post ideas, 18 beauty blog post ideas, 15 more lifestyle and fashion blog post ideas.

Create Measurable Goals

And lastly, for the new year, create some measurable goals for your blog! This can be anything from increasing blog reads to a certain number, increasing comments, to posting more times a month. Just be sure to push yourself but don’t be too hard on yourself at the same time. All that matters is that you try!

And those are some things you can do to get your blog ready for the new year! Just remember that like with everything in life, hard work and time will make your blog grow. Just create what makes you happy and the rest will fall into place. I hope you all have an amazing 2019 and happy blogging!

Great tips! I’m sure I could refresh my about page more, it’s a bit long and I can’t remember the last time I updated it, haha!

I was hoping to have more blog posts scheduled so that I’d have January all scheduled and ready to go, but I’ve been so busy with Christmas things. I have a couple of weeks scheduled, maybe if the boys nap more after Christmas I’ll get some time in to finish writing posts! 🙂

Hope that you had a nice weekend and are excited for Christmas 🙂 Our celebrations kick off with Christmas eve family time traditions on the coast so I’ll be taking a little blogging break for a few days but wanted to wish you merry Christmas!

You’ve listed some great points in this post; I tend to do this during the first week of the New Year, but doing it a week beforehand makes much more sense! Merry Christmas darling!! x

These are such wonderful tips. While reading, I realized that I haven’t updated my About page since I started my blog. I’ll definitely have to set some time aside for that.

I actually keep most of my brainstormed blog topics in a list on my phone so that I can add to it whenever I think of something no matter where I am. Sometimes weeks go by and I won’t add anything, other times I end up adding 10 topics in a day.

Thanks for sharing the wonderful tips. I hope you enjoy your Christmas celebrations.

I’m so glad these tips could help! Having a blog topics list on your phone is a great idea. I have the same thing where sometimes I can’t come up with anything and other times I pretty much think of a whole month’s worth of posts. I hope you had a great Christmas Kathrin!

These are such great tips Kara! I will need to spend some time reading the links here too for more good tips! I was very surprised to see how much of my traffic actually comes from Instagram, I have a very low followers base there, so I will need to concentrate more on Instagram next year! I would never have thought to link newer blog posts to older posts! I hope you have a very successful 2019 on your blog lovely! xx

This is such a great read dear, and I couldn’t agree more, especially with the last one. Too many times we’re so fixated to our big goals and feel frustrated when we feel it’s still so far ahead. Creating small and measurable goals gives you something a little more tangible to work on and celebrate when you get it.

Thanks for the tips! I guess I should start writing things down. You know, like when you’re just walking around or in the shower, ideas come to you, but you forget the ideas after awhile. Nice post! 🙂

I’m glad the tips could help! And that happens to me all the time! I usually get most of my ideas in the shower and I’ll try to type them into my phone without getting it wet haha x
