Tips For Putting Yourself Online

02/21/2019

One of the hardest parts of creating content online can be opening up about yourself. It’s always a little nerve-wracking to put yourself and part of your life online, where thousands to millions of people can potentially see it. For some people, it comes more naturally and for other’s, it is a bit harder. It does get easier the more you do it, but I thought I’d share some tips and things to keep in mind when putting yourself online!

You Will Never Be Everyone’s Cup Of Tea

There are millions of people who use social media and read blogs every day. This means that you will never be everyone’s cup of tea, and that is perfectly okay! Create and share what you want and what makes you happy, and there will be people who like it and some who don’t. There is only one you, so make that your superpower.

Be Honest And Stay True To Yourself

Just like not being everyone’s cup of tea, it can be easy to feel like you have to change or create different content because everyone else is. Staying true to yourself is the most important thing and it will be the best choice in the long run. You don’t have to pretend to like something because everyone else does, so always remember to be honest! People will notice and appreciate your authenticity.

Set Boundaries

It’s important to set boundaries and know what you are comfortable with sharing, and what you are not. There is no rule that says you have to share something, so if you’re not comfortable with sharing it- don’t! You don’t have to put your whole life online unless you want to. Make a list in your head of what you do want to share and what you don’t, and whenever you are debating on sharing something think back to that list.

Safety First

Although a lot of the internet can be a wonderful, inspiring place, especially when it comes to blogging, it is still the internet. There is always that risk factor of someone finding out your personal information that you don’t want being shared. Some things to consider is, of course, not sharing exactly where you live. You can share the state and town if you’re comfortable with that, but don’t share your exact location. It’s also a good idea to post about being somewhere after you have left.

And those are a few things to keep in mind when putting yourself online! It’s all about sharing what you’re comfortable with sharing, having fun and creating content that makes you happy.

You wrote some great tips! Safety is a huge part of being online. I never check in anywhere near my house or where anybody lives. I always check in after I leave a location, you can never be too careful! :]

  2. Thanks for sharing these useful tips Kara, I totally agree that it can be daunting to open up about yourself to begin with.

This got me thinking how sometimes we forget that what we share can be seen by so many people, so it’s important to keep it as safe as possible.
Love your Uniqlo cardigan. This brand is so comfy!

These are great tips! Especially the safety one – the best way to do it is share where you’ve been, not where you’re going 🙂

Hope that your weekend is off to a great start! The cyclone that may have impacted us has moved further offshore which is good news, but we will still have a quiet weekend in case it comes back!

Thanks for sharing these tips. Sharing pieces of my life online was always difficult for me. I especially like the point you made about staying true to yourself. It can be so easy to try to change for others, but being yourself is the only way to be happy with what you share.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Great tips especially the last one, it seems this is often do not remember this. Though I must say blogging in general is becoming more and more challenging. First much like magazines they are being pushed aside by YouTube and IG. And then on top of this you have the self serving behavior of other bloggers where they pay it forward to themselves. One can read and comment on 20-25 blogs spending a good hour to hour and half and only get 3 comments back. It is enough to put one off blogging. I am close to it and may move to YT all together at some point

These are such important tips – I enjoyed reading them and I totally agree with you! Being honest to yourself is so, so important. Oftentimes I notice people changing just to get the views. Don’t get me wrong – views are great but staying true to yourself is more important!
