Little decor pieces can really help make a space feel more cozy and personal. And one of my favorite places to put them is on shelves. It’s the perfect place to show off the little things in your home that you love. But shelves can sometimes be a bit tricky to style. Here are few tips for styling shelves in your home, whether that’s on a bookcase, wall shelves, or anywhere else!
If you are unsure of what to add or where to start, start off with a few simple items. Add two or three of your favorite items and then slowly build from there. Simple is always better when starting out and can help make the process less overwhelming.
Depending on how big your shelf is, I would recommend having one or two bigger, taller pieces that take center stage. Then add a few smaller items varying in size and width.
If you have too many items that you love and are not sure what should go on the shelf, think of the overall vibe or feeling you want. Do you want it to be a place to display your love for books, plants, or a place to primarily share memories with photos and trinkets? Or your overall vibe could just be that you love all the items!
Add a bit of life with a few small plants or flowers, either real or fake. I personally love adding dried flowers or a hanging plant.
This will be a bit tricky if your shelf isn’t that deep, but try layering items a bit in front of each other to add some depth. This can be a candle placed slightly in front of a picture frame, a few plants, or perfume bottles. And don’t forget to put some items on top of others too (this only really works with a stack of books)!
Your shelf is never going to be “perfect”, so you might as well not even strive for it! Just have fun and play around with different items. It’s all about showing off the items you love and creating a section of your space you love to look at.
Play around with what you already have and see what looks good together. Styling shelves is a lot of placing the items, stepping back to look at the shelf, and then moving things around again. I hope these tips helped, and happy shelf styling!
