Tips For Styling Shelves In Your Home

02/25/2020

Styling Shelves

Little decor pieces can really help make a space feel more cozy and personal. And one of my favorite places to put them is on shelves. It’s the perfect place to show off the little things in your home that you love. But shelves can sometimes be a bit tricky to style. Here are few tips for styling shelves in your home, whether that’s on a bookcase, wall shelves, or anywhere else!

How to style shelves

Simple is always better

If you are unsure of what to add or where to start, start off with a few simple items. Add two or three of your favorite items and then slowly build from there. Simple is always better when starting out and can help make the process less overwhelming.

Focus on size

Depending on how big your shelf is, I would recommend having one or two bigger, taller pieces that take center stage. Then add a few smaller items varying in size and width.

Pick an overall vibe or feeling you want to go for

If you have too many items that you love and are not sure what should go on the shelf, think of the overall vibe or feeling you want. Do you want it to be a place to display your love for books, plants, or a place to primarily share memories with photos and trinkets? Or your overall vibe could just be that you love all the items!

Add some life

Add a bit of life with a few small plants or flowers, either real or fake. I personally love adding dried flowers or a hanging plant.

Layer items

This will be a bit tricky if your shelf isn’t that deep, but try layering items a bit in front of each other to add some depth. This can be a candle placed slightly in front of a picture frame, a few plants, or perfume bottles. And don’t forget to put some items on top of others too (this only really works with a stack of books)!

Give up on perfection

Your shelf is never going to be “perfect”, so you might as well not even strive for it! Just have fun and play around with different items. It’s all about showing off the items you love and creating a section of your space you love to look at.

My few of my favorite items to add to a shelf:

Wooden Shelf and Peg Rail

Play around with what you already have and see what looks good together. Styling shelves is a lot of placing the items, stepping back to look at the shelf, and then moving things around again. I hope these tips helped, and happy shelf styling!

  2. I absolutely love what you’ve done with these shelves! One of my favorite ways is layering and I’m glad you mentioned it here. Overall I think any home decor should reflect the personality of the owner. There’s no right or wrong way.

  3. Love the topic! We just put in some shelves in our bedroom and I’ve placed body mists and lotion on half of it, still debating what to put on the other side lol. But you’re totally right, I think layering photos maybe behind a candle look very cute! Thanks for the ideas doll!!!

This is a clever kind of storage as it serves as a placement for decor as well.

Your shelf looks so cute, you have organised it well each way! 🙂 the biggest thing I’ve noticed about our new house is the lack of shelves! When we built it we built lots of cupboards and storage but we don’t have any shelves on the walls yet – I’m sure we will add some over time! 🙂

Hope that you are having a great weekend 🙂 We spent the day with my mum yesterday shopping the sales for the leap day (and getting some great toy bargains we’ve put away for the kids birthdays!)

Size is so important when it comes to interior design – you’ve really nailed it with your shelving. I’m so noncommittal when it comes to my apartment, so this is great inspo! Happy Monday xx
